    A Cardinal Lesson by Melodie Yvonne

    I feed Lil Marlin every day and think of my Aunt Marla
    He hounds me with persistence like she did for me to call her
    and if I could go back with all the things that I know now
    I’d take a break and call her every day some way, somehow

    So, every day when Lil Marlin signals at my window
    I take a break and step outside to feel that Hoosier breeze blow
    I throw some vittles out to all the critters in my yard
    and wonder if Aunt Marla’s smiling down from up above

    I think about a time when she said she wished she had wings
    and know she’s up in heaven, but sometimes I wonder things
    ‘Cause when those bright red feathers come a’ knockin’ at my door
    It just feels like there’s just a bit of magic there in store

    You see they say that Cardinals are a message from your loved ones
    Though I know sometimes we see what we want right when we lost ‘em
    but coincidence is hard to prove when you look at the timing
    of Lil Marlin showing up to comfort all my crying

    So, I know my Aunt Marla’s up in heaven full of love
    And every day for every minute I thank God above
    but some days when that grief creeps in and those tears come a’ callin’
    I hear that chirping, smile real wide, and I thank my Aunt Marla
